At the time when this canvas was painted the Turks had for 130 years governed in Achaia, the district where Andrew was said to have been martyred. This may be the reason for the turbans on the men crucifying the saint, although turbans are common in 16th-century Venetian paintings of events in the East. The Golden Legend account says that many of the onlookers who heard Andrew's preaching from the cross protested the crucifixion of the "saintly, gentle man."
